Personal mentors
Each new arrival is assigned a volunteer who acts as a personal mentor and accompanies the newcomer during the long period of adjustment. This regular contact provides sympathetic support, friendship and advice. The mentor is responsible for reporting the needs of the newcomer to the appropriate address in Hillel.
The mentors can turn to our team of social work professionals for help when necessary.
Host families
Once the newcomers join Hillel we place them with host families whenever possible. The families provide a secure setting, emotional warmth, and an opportunity to get a close look at life in the modern world.
Absorption of this kind is a challenge for both the newcomer and the family, so we devote considerable effort to helping both sides adjust. We have professional volunteers who offer counseling and support.
In offering its hospitality the host family makes an enormous in-kind contribution to our work.
